Victim Services

The Victim Rights Act (VRA) in Colorado ensures that crime victims are treated with fairness, respect, dignity and that they are free from intimidation, harassment, and abuse.  Colorado voters amended the state Constitution to include Victim Rights in 1992.  Our program was one of the first county programs started on the Western Slope. Our Sheriff and the County Commissioners have been supportive of the program from its inception.

Victim Services is a department within in the Delta County Sheriff’s Office that works alongside law enforcement.  Victim Advocate Heather Chavez works to help victims of crime from the moment the crime is reported and works as a support system for victim’s as they navigate the judicial process. Our Victim's Advocate is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide on-site crisis intervention to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other victim related crimes. It is our Victim’s Advocate’s duty to offer support and provide victims the information and resources that fit their individual needs. This also includes referrals to different agencies and applications for CVC (Crime Victim Compensation) when appropriate.

Victim Services is a full time position at our agency funded by Delta County and is also a grantee of Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement (VALE).

If you are a victim or are in need of support or guidance, or if you have any questions, please feel free to call or stop by the Sheriff’s Office Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
